HEALTH:
Dog parks provide a place and accommodations, such as plastic bag dispensers and garbage cans, for dog owners to safely collect and properly dispose of their dog's waste. Communities without dog parks normally have a health hazard issue with dog waste on public sidewalks and parks and other privately owned areas such as front lawns.
.
SAFETY:
* Dog parks keep our dogs safe to legally run free, off-leash without the fear of being accidentally hit by cars, or interacting with or endangering other domestic or wild animals, or being exposed to other dangers.
* Most people cannot walk or run as fast as their dogs (between 20-35mph). Having a safe place for them to run off leash also cuts down on the danger of having the owner dragged by the leash should a dog become distracted and take off. This has caused many injuries to dog owners.
* Studies have shown that if there is questionable activity in a public park area, once a dog park is installed and is being utilized, a whole different type of individuals begin using the park and the criminal element disappears. Many cities have purposely installed dog parks for this reason.
SHELTERS:
* Dogs that have been allowed to safely interact with other dogs and people and are well socialized are less likely to develop behavior problems. Since this is the number one reason dogs are surrendered to shelters, in areas where there are successful dog parks, the number of dogs with these problems goes down. Consequently, the euthanization numbers and also the costs to the taxpayer go down.
* Dogs who have been fully exercised and socialized make better companions, pets and neighbors for everyone -- dog owners and non-dog owners alike.
SOCIALIZATION:
* Not only are dog parks great for our canine companions, but they also allow whole families to enjoy public parks together. They become and ideal location for meeting other people with like interests.
* Dog parks allow disabled persons the opportunity to get out and fully exercise their dogs and to meet their neighbors.
NEIGHBORHOODS:
* Dog parks utilized as canine learning enrichment centers are an ideal location to educate the public on responsible pet ownership and care. They bring people together, so not only do the dogs socialize, but people too.
* Statistically it has been shown that homes located in neighborhoods where there is a dog park become more in demand and as a result, those home value increase. People want to live where their animal companions are welcome.
