WHO IS SOPHIA ?
We're naming this organization in the honor and loving memory of our yellow lab mix, Queen Sophia, who was killed in a tragic accident on October 4, 2004 at the age of only 14 months. We had taken her to a nearby open area which we thought was and had been a safe place for her to run off-leash. However, that day she found a hole in the fence and ran out in front of a speeding pick-up truck who callously ran her over and just kept on going without even a slight pause. It was in our heartbreak that we realized there are no "safe" places for a beloved canine companion to run off-leash other than an official, legal dog park. We made up our minds that we don't want her death, or any of the other dogs we see along the side of the roads, to be in vain.
Sophia started her short life abused and then abandoned. She was dumped out in the country to fend on her own. Alone and terrified, she was taken in by a wonderful family, then given to us.
When she arrived at our home, she was scared, shaking, timid and shy. However, being as smart as she was, she figured out extremely quickly that she was in a safe place. In no time, she became "Queen Sophia" because she "ruled" the house.
Sophia was beautiful, not only on the outside, but in spirit. In her short life she endeared herself to people, other dogs, our neighbors, birds, cats and just about everything in which she came in contact. She never met a stranger. She had a puppies' exuberance for life. She taught us so much. We were truly blessed to have had her in our lives. We don't want to ever forget her.
